Burgundy 2023 En Primeur
"I am hard pushed to think of another vintage so pleasurable from barrel—pleasure that its best growers will translate into bottle." Neal Martin, Vinous, Jan '25
In late November we made our annual pilgrimage to Burgundy, to taste the 2023 vintage from barrel. The wines were a wonderful surprise, far higher in quality and exciting to taste than we had anticipated. The white wines are ripe but beautifully fresh, slightly less concentrated than the '22s, but with more texture and balance. The reds are delightful to taste, with exceptionally supple tannins, immediate but also age-worthy. Best of all, both reds and whites were especially representative of their terroirs this year, something you don't see so readily in hotter years.
2023 also produced a good-sized harvest, similar to 2022. With the 2024 harvest drastically reduced in size, this year's en primeur campaign represents an excellent opportunity to secure stocks of your favourite wines.
Fresh and supple are the bywords for the 2023 vintage
The 2023 growing season was unusual in recent times, in so far as there were no extreme weather events! Spring frosts were largely avoided, mildew pressure was moderated by airflow and not an issue for most, and temperatures, although warm, did not see the heat spikes that characterised 2022. The conditions were so favourable that many producers carried out a green harvest, reducing the volume of the crop by removing a proportion of unripe fruit from the vines.
The autumn ripening period saw some beautiful weather, but although temperatures were in the mid-30s by day, by night they cooled significantly. Most producers harvested in the first 2-3 weeks of September. Rain in the Côte de Nuits around 16-18 September was a key decision point, with some growers opting to delay harvesting until after the rains had passed.
The white wines
For us, the white wines were consistent in offering beautifully ripe fruit, with an attractive texture. In hotter years such as 2020 and '22 the texture can come from glycerin, but not so in this new vintage. The warm autumn meant that growers picked early, to preserve ripeness, leaving plenty of malic acid to be converted in lactic acid during the malo-lactic fermentation, giving a supple, sometimes creamy texture. The perception of alcohol on the palate is also notably low, giving the white wines a weightless quality. At least one grower compared the '23 white wines to the superb 2017s, but with more fruit concentration. The distinct terroirs of each vineyard were beautifully delineated, particularly in Puligny-Montrachet.
.
The red wines
The reds were among the most immediate and approachable we have tasted from barrel, even at the level of the grands crus. The fruit concentration may be a notch lower than in the 22s, but we found more red fruit character, more acidity, more balance, and more precise expression of terroirs. Tasting at domaines like Joseph Voillot and Hudelot-Baillet in Chambolle, the wines were generous but with nothing excessive about them. The acidity and tannins will ensure they age beautifully.
The case for 2023 Burgundy
2022 and 2023 are both beautiful and plentiful vintages, bookended by 2021 and 2024, which were severely reduced in quantity. The very best wines (at every price level) will most likely sell out this year. Whilst the market for the top ten domaines (DRC et al) has been over-heated and seen prices falling, this does not apply to the more modest domaines that are the focus of our offer. Wines like those from Michelot in Meursault and the Santenays from Borgeot and Bachey-Legros are extraordinarily good value, in their context.

Tasting NotesLovely freshness, zippy acidity, citrus lemon, balancing the 15% new oak, more freshness than in recent vintages. Sam says the warm weather at harvest made it a challenge to keep the white grapes fresh, requiring a fast picking. The pH is similar to '22 but it is more noticeable on the palate, with a higher proportion of tartaric acid retained in the finished wine (whereas malic acid is lost during the malolactic). This has a great balance of richness, subtle oak influence and freshness. RKL |

Tasting NotesWe did not taste the 1er Cru Les Morgeots this year (running out of time to get to our next appointment in Meursault) but based on tasting the 2023 village Chassagne, plus previous experience of tasting Les Morgeots, this should be superb this year. Sam says this plot is on deep clay and limestone soils, giving power and depth. RKL |

Tasting NotesMaranges is the most southern of the Côtes de Beaune villages and is still less well-known by UK burgundy drinkers, which means it is a great source of excellent-value wines. This has a lovely fresh nose, with the 20% new oak just adding a touch of weighty richness, but it's still fresh. Then there is some lovely reductive struck-match and flinty mineral character on the palate, with ripe citrus fruits. V. good. RKL |

Tasting NotesFrom younger vines in the northern part of Santenay, at a lower elevation, hence riper in style than Sous La Roche. This is mostly a young vine cuvée but from complex soils. Intense but delicate, understated, fine-boned, unfolding on the palate with a salty character, iodine minerality, and a pithy texture. Grilled nuts and lemons and a really long finish. A complex premier cru to compete with many whites from Meursaults and Chassagnes. Lovely. RKL |

Tasting NotesThe 'Sous La Roche' lieu-dit is a small vineyard, less than half a hectare, quite high up on the slopes above the village of Santenay. The grapes are passed through a gentle pneumatic press at low pressure soon after harvesting. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at very low temperatures, in barrel, with particular emphasis on lees management, which contributes roundness and complexity of aroma. The wine spends 12 to 15 months in cask, 20% new, with regular bâtonnage until malolactic starts. The 2023 has elegant white flowers and crystalline fruit on the nose, really fresh and fine, some reductive matchstick aromas, flinty minerality on the palate, and a quite grippy, assertive core of fruit, with concentrated lemon flavours and a squeeze of lemony acidity and saltiness on the finish. Tasting NotesFrom vines planted in 1935. A great all-round village-level red burgundy with some good weight to it. South exposure, deep soils with chalk. Adjacent to the town of Santenay itself and surrounded by premier cru vineyards! Ink-dark in the glass, lovely dark fruit, blackcurrant and minty freshness, then cherry, blackcurrant and dark plum fruit on the palate, spicy finish. Clos des Hâtes has always been a sweet spot in the range, but this year shows just how good it is. RKL |

Tasting Notes"Les Fourneaux" is a lieu-dit within the Clos Rousseau Premier Cru, one of the Santenay's best sites. Most of the vineyard was planted in 1914! Immediate, expressive, with intense dark cherry, then sparkling energy on palate, the tannins providing wonderful energy and length. The finish is truly impressive. RKL |

Tasting NotesThe Clos Rousseau premier cru is the most prized location in Santenay, to the south, close to Maranges, on complex marl and limestone soils. Dark, powerful and intense, deep dark fruit, black cherry, earth, then super fine dark cherry palate, supple tannins, more fruit with deliclious concentration, exceptional length and minerality. A beautiful and very complete wine. RKL |

Tasting NotesThe Champs Claude lieu-dit is on the Chassagne side of Santenay, with more deep, red oxide soils. Grippier than Les Charmes, a 'bloody wine' says Sam, as we taste! The aromas of rust or iron or blood are very distinct. Very dry palate with powerful tannins, this will develop beautifully with 2-4 years in bottle. RKL |

Tasting NotesFrom a walled vineyard in Bouzeron, owned entirely by the Borgeots, hence this is a monopole for the domaine. 20% new oak this year, due to the need to lay in more barrels for the larger '22 vintage. The fruit from Clos Carbonade is able to balance the oak, with aromas of ozone-freshness, pear and strawberry (yes, a red fruit aroma). A lovely creamy texture to the palate. RKL |

Tasting Notes"This wine starts life in a mix of tank and barrel. The tank component, which includes the vines on schistous soils in one part of Fuissé, shows some green tints to the colour, with an attractive fruit both lively and juicy. There is a definite bitterness. Still, youthful promise. The barrel component, from clay-limestone soils includes some 1er Cru grapes as a counterpoint to the schist, and a bit of fruit from Vergisson. Pale lemon in colour without the green, a slightly richer and softer nose, more evidently Pouilly-Fuissé. Fresh plum fruit, balanced and delicious. My assessment may be over cautious. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted Apr 2024. 89-90 points." Jasper Morris MW |

Tasting Notes"Autour de la Roche', formerly known as 'Sous Vergisson' is a blend of grapes grown in the best terroirs located around the Vergisson outcrop. The average age of the vines that go into cuvee is around 40 years. Tasting NotesSituated right in the centre of the village of Fuissé, this Clos is just over two "hectares" in size and is planted on a shallow slope that faces east. Although a small parcel of vines was planted in 2003, most of the vineyard dates back to 1956, and is therefore more than 60 years old, making it one of the oldest owned by the domaine. The soil is derived from limestone-rich marls deposited during the upper Bathonian. The 2023 has an intense, fine backbone of acidity, spice, pear and lime-fruit freshness running through it, with excellent minerality providing length on the finish. RKL |

Tasting NotesBased in the northern part of Fuissé, just on the borders of the hamlet of Pouilly, the Tournant de Pouilly is a vineyard of one hectare in area, split between two parcels, planted on a gentle slope that faces north-east. This historic vineyard is a part of 1er Cru "Les Reisses". Planted by Jean-Alfred Ferret in 1995, 1963 and 1964, the vines from this parcel are, on average, a little bit older than 60 years old, one of the oldest vineyards owned by the Domaine.------This deep clay loam soil contains lots of limestone, but little in the way of stones. It is derived from the pale loams of the Dogger. Fermentations and ageing take place in casks: 25% of new cask, 75% of cask from 1 to 3 wines for 10 months. The ageing continued in stainless steel tanks, always with all their lees for another 9 months. Bottled just like the Ménétrières, at the very last days of March 2022. Always a bit austere and shy at first glance, it is undoubtedly the most "chic" of the selections with its chalky touch and its fresh and persistent finish." J.A. Ferret------This has the beautiful texture on the palate that seems to characterise the '23s, not the rich glycerin kind as seen in the '22s, but a more elegant, silkiness. It balances richness with a chalky minerality and the longest finish of this flight of wines. RKL |

From a bright fresh red fruit at the front of the palate to something a little richer and darker behind, along with a peppery finish. Fine length, this is accessible but should also age quite well. Drink from 2029-2034. 93 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges ler Cru is a little smudged and overripe compared to other cuvées. The palate is quite smooth and sensual on the entry. It's slightly lactic in style-its richness is countered by acidity. To be honest, I prefer the previous vintage to this. 89-91 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"Still a fair length of barrel elevage to come. Dense crimson colour, plenty of oak but a massive fruit weight to match. So different from Vaucrains, vastly more depth and energy though I still crave for the finesse of Vaucrains. This is more evidently immediately satisfying, and has the classic heart of this part of the Côte. Drink from 2032-2040. 5 star rating. 95-97 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very succinct on the nose. It doesn't race out of the blocks but skulks around like a moody teen, biding its time before offering blackberry, raspberry and forest floor scents. It has fine delineation and I appreciate the restraint. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, lovely balance and poise, plenty of energy and a touch of black pepper toward the finish. Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Borniques ler Cru was raised in one- and two-year-old barrels. A mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, it is a little earthier than Les Cras without the same degree of precision. The palate is fresh, crisp and medium-bodied with fine tannins. It's not the most complex Chambolle, yet there is plenty of energy here. Give this two or three years once bottled. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a lively, vibrant, well-defined bouquet with black cherry, raspberry and light herbaceous scents. It will need time in bottle to really gel. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly lactic entry, with hints of dark chocolate infusing the red fruit. It's silky smooth on the finish with perhaps just a soupçon of fig. It leans slightly toward a more exotic style but is still attractive. 90-92 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras ler Cru, matured with 30% new oak, has a little more precision and a touch more mineral drive within the red fruit than Les Charmes. Tasting Notes"The nose is still carrying vestiges of the malolactic fermentation and is unreadable. On the palate though there is good freshness to the appealingly vibrant medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the persistent, agreeably dry and detailed finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. 89-91 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------"Made in concrete eggs, not yet racked or sulphured since Les Forêts has only just finished fermenting. Still in its lactic phase. Very embryonic, though there is a promising weight of fruit. A bit of fresh liquorice, this is potentially one of the more energetic wines in the cellar and I expect it to develop well from here. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasting Notes"Now blended into tank, having been entirely vinified in wood. Mid lemon yellow. Perhaps the wood is a little more marked here. Good bright fruit in the middle with vibrant acidity but the wood is indeed less well integrated, for now. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Jul 2024. 89-91 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com"More subtle though still easily perceptible oak influence is present on the more floral-suffused aromas that feature notes of Granny Smith apple, spice, wet stone and a whiff of iodine. The mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is notably finer, though not denser, while retaining good delineation to the stony and sleek finale. This is still quite primary though if it can add depth with a few years of bottle age, it should be quite good. 89-92 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound |

Tasting Notes"Collet explained that this had just been racked and filtered yesterday so not surprisingly, it was quite firmly reduced and revealing almost nothing. More interesting are the finer but not denser middle weight flavors that possess good vibrancy if only average depth before concluding in a bitter lemon-inflected finale. 87-90 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------"All made in stainless steel. Pale lemon colour. Quite exotic white fruit. A luscious perfume sitting on top of the stones, which reappear at the back and deliver some welcome tension. Which part will dominate later? Tasting Notes"Once again the nose reflects moderate wood influence though it easily allows the slightly riper if otherwise similar aromas to shine. There is also excellent intensity to the denser and more powerful broad-shouldered and sappy flavors that possess a supple mid-palate that tightens up noticeably on the solidly persistent and nicely dry finale that could also use better depth. 90-92 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------"Still in barrel. Some fresh pale yellow colour. Ripe orchard and plum fruit, plenty of generosity. There is fair length, possibly just a little light in tension through the middle, becoming more generous again right at the finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasting Notes(Domaine) "Fresh mid lemon. A little bit of oak joins the fruit on the nose, and there is a floral element too. Then the palate offers the limestone pebble effect. A fine, interesting and complete Pernand, the best En Caradeux (the actual vineyard of Croix de Pierre) I have tasted from 2023. Drink from 2028-2032. Tasted Oct 2024. 5-star rating. 92-93 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"Racked to tank, to bottle shortly. Their own sub-Puligny plots, all made in barrel. Quite a discreet nose, with the oak influence subdued. The concentration comes at the back of the palate, with white orchard fruit backed by the right degree of oak, good acidity and persistence. Drink from 2026-2029. 88-89 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"Two plots, picked together. Pale lemon yellow. A burst of quite fleshy white fruit on the nose. Picked early as it had hit 13% and acidities were about to start declining. This tastes fully ripe yet with plenty of energy. Waves of fruit comes across the palate. Just the oak is not completely integrated. Drink from 2028-2033. 91-94 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"A study in citrus and smoke. Kaleidoscopic. Pixels. Slashes of colour and bold with a kind of playful, reckless, savage strength of personality. Van Gogh. I’m looking for sunflowers. Wow, this is dramatic and intense. 17++ points" jancisrobinson.com (TC) |

Tasting Notes"Mostly from lower plots with a bit of Vireuils and Clous. Lemon yellow. Not at all expressive on the nose, yet. There is plenty of fruit on the palate though, with some breadth. White ripe orchard fruit, just a little citrus as well, medium bodied, persistent. Quite accessible in style, just needs time for the aromatics to deliver. Drink from 2027-2030. 88-90 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"Pale lemon colour. Chiselled limestone on the nose, now a little more flesh showing. This has excellent structure and a range of flavours, apples, stone fruit, a little greengage, and good length. Shows the Poruzots character which is more about shape and structure than ample fruit. Very classy finish. Drink from 2028-2033. 91-94 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"Pale lemon colour. A light perfume with some herbal notes. Discreet but distinguished. Builds beautifully on the palate, with fresh energy, a lime streak, though the main fruit hovers between white and yellow, attractively oaked, and with very fine length. Attractive tension too. Drink from 2027-2032. 90-92 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"Smells like buttercups and marigolds and melted butter. Dried grass and popcorn and chamomile. Lots of lemon citrus. Almost more a parcel of beautiful elements than a painting, yet. Lots of detail and complexity here but not a composition yet. 17 points" jancisrobinson.com (TC)------"Very little affected by the hail, fortunately. White fruit tension on the nose. There is a good lemon wash too across the stone fruit, and a fine long finish which in fact keeps delivering a little more. Tasting Notes"Foudres, 600 litre barrels, older 228s and 10% in tank. A lime tint to the colour, while the nose is clearly riper than the Aligoté. A little more flesh on the palate but this is more marked by its biodynamic purity. Plenty of energy at the back of the palate, and fine persistence. Baby Puligny, almost. Includes some purchases. Drink from 2026-2028. 87-89 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"Very pale with a lime streak. Seems light and early picked on the nose, then perfect maturity on the palate, with a little bit of white fruit and flesh, correct acidity and excellent length. Will be accessible quite early.
