"One of the successes of the vintage. 94 points" - Jane Anson
"If prices relax, as was hinted, I can see this being a no-brainer to purchase because it will drink early and hold well, thanks to its innate balance. As always, the flavour and stance that Pontet-Canet delivers are all its own, and fans will be delighted here...18.5 points." Matthew Jukes
Released for sale en primeur, 2024 Château Pontet-Canet is offered at £360 per six bottles in bond, setting a release price slightly below that of the market-busting 2019, and only 11% above the 2014. The ex-château price is also flat on their 2012 and 2013 release price!
The 2024 is launched into a difficult market and expectations of Pontet-Canet's charismatic owner Alfred Tesseron are always high but, looking back at our release offers of this wine over the last fifteen years, we can't help feeling this is a fair release price for this innovative, quality-focused Pauillac fifth growth, winding back the clock on prices to those of a dozen years or more.
Tasting the '24 from cask, we found it had beautiful floral aromas on the nose, a sweet, rounded fruit entry on the palate and cool, with fresh and well-balanced elegant black fruit character on the mid-palate. As with many wines we tasted this year, there was nothing to dislike, with good texture and well-integrated tannins on the finish. The only tell-tale that this is not a "great" vintage was the slight lightness on the finish.
Jane Anson refers to this as a "slim-style Pauillac". With this balance and at around 13% abv, some may prefer this style to some of the blockbusters of recent hot vintages.
