Burgundy 2023 En Primeur: Domaine Joseph Voillot

We are delighted to offer the 2023 vintage from Domaine Voillot in Volnay. Over the last decade, it has been a pleasure to see winemaker Etienne Chaix come into his own after taking over from his uncle, the legendary Jean-Pierre Charlot and the domaine makes some of our favourite red wines in the whole of the Côte d'Or.
For us, this little domaine is at the spiritual heart of Burgundy, sitting on one corner of Volnay's village square, just across from the impressive Romanesque-gothic church and adjacent to the institution that is Le Cellier Volnaysien, a wonderful restaurant serving traditional dishes like oeuf en meurette, jambon persillé and escargots to crowds of local vignerons at lunchtime (dining here should be on every wine lover's bucket list).
In most respects, Etienne's winemaking is almost as traditional as the dishes at Le Volnaysien, with the exception of a new pneumatic press in 2019, which may be responsible in part for the slightly deeper colour and flavour extraction in recent vintages.
We found plenty of sumptuous dark fruit and powerful but elegant, supple tannins in Voillot's 2023s, beginning with a superb old vine Bourgogne Rouge, made in very small quantities. We often refer to this as a 'baby Volnay' and the description is apt this year, with more tannic structure and depth than we have noticed before. The Volnay Vieilles Vignes and the Volnays and Pommards premiers crus all showed their terroirs with superb clarity in this vintage, with a layered complexity in the premiers crus that needs to be tasted to be understood. We have selected our favourites from among them.
Quantities are extremely limited, so please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to order.
Offered en primeur, landing Autumn 2025.
