This morning sees the release of the 2022 vintage of Ornellaia, with a 99-point score from Jane Anson, and 2023 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia, the excellent-value third wine of the estate. Alongside these, we re-offer 2022 Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia, the highly respected second wine. We have limited stock to offer so please let us know if you would like to request an allocation.
If you are new to Super Tuscans, Ornellaia is a Bordeaux blend, first made in 1985, on the Tenuta San Guido estate in Bolgheri, on the coast of Tuscany. Adjacent to the Sassicaia estate, the vineyard is split into many parcels with complex alluvial soils that used to form part of the seabed. As with all Bolgheri wines, the proximity of the sea means a cool, fresh climate, quite distinct from what we associate with hotter areas like Brunello.
The 2022 vintage in Bolgheri saw a lengthy dry spell from May, lasting for about 75 days. The vines suffered from notable water stress, producing a low-yield vintage. Fortunately, rain from summer storms freed up the physiology of the vines, allowing for an excellent ripening period. The harvest took place in superb conditions, producing a generous, full-bodied style of Ornellaia.
The magic formula of Bordeaux varieties grown in a coastal Mediterranean climate has made Ornellaia much-loved among UK fine wine lovers, which makes the second and third wines all the more compelling, with much of the same appeal but at an affordable price. Galloni describes '22 Serre Nuove as "everything a second wine should be" and 2023 Le Volte as "a total delight", both ready to drink now.
