Released this morning, 2020 Château Le Gay is one of Neal Martin's top five Pomerols of the vintage and by far the least expensive of them, Le Gay is under the same ownership as ‘micro-property’ La Violette which with only 250 cases a year is almost impossible to obtain. Luckily in 2020, the team seem to have had more success with the Le Gay and we are pleased to be able to offer a small quantity.
Château Le Gay in an estate in the commune of Pomerol. The estate takes its name from the land, the 'lieu-dit' for the plot being Le Gay. It was established in the mid-19th century. For much of the post-waer period, it was managed by the Moueix family. In 2014 the winery was renovated, allowing microvinification to be employed. The 10.5-hectare vineyard is planted to 90%Merlotand 10% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard has a terroir of clay and gravel soil on the Pomerol plateau, with the best plots being adjacent to La Fleur Petrus.
The short video below shows Le Gay's owner Henri Parent presenting the 2019 vintage; worth watching as it is one of the best such films we have seen, illustrating various stages of the harvest and fermentation:
