2020 Château Labegorce has been released for sale this afternoon En Primeur at £235 per dozen bottles in bond. As Lisa Perotti-Brown comments, 2020 is an 'enigmatic' vintage in which some wines have performed even better than in 2018 and 2019, whilst others have underperformed.  In Margaux, at least some of this variability can be attributed to low rainfall during July.  Estates with more clay terroirs did well (as it retains more water) and Labegorce was one of these.  

Jane Anson describes it as "Less opulent than 2019, more classic and serious but this is great (93 points)" whilst Jeb Dunnuck enthuses about its "Rock star crème de cassis, graphite, roasted herbs, iron, and loamy earth nuances " and "wonderful purity of fruit", describing it as "terrific value" (93-95 points).

Château Labegorce, Margaux

Château Labegorce is Cru Bourgeois Supérieur estate in the commune of Margaux.  It has existence since 1332 of “a vineyard belonging to the noble La Bégorce family”.  The Perrodo family acquired Labégorce in 1989, renovating both the château building and the vineyard.  They also reunited the estate by buying Labegorce Zede in 2005, originally part of the estate but for many years a separate vineyard.  The Perrodo family also own Château Marquis d’Alesme, a third growth Margaux.  Nathalie Perrodo is in charge at Labegorce.  

The 70 hectares of vines are planted to 50 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 45 % Merlot, 3 % Cabernet Franc and 2 % Petit Verdot.  The terroir is composed of 70% sand and gravel and 30% sand and silt.  The wines are aged for 12-14 months in oak barriques, 40-50% new.
