This is our fourth year of offering Domaine Hudelot-Baillet's wines en primeur and for us, this is the best vintage yet, with the wines showing a gorgeous concentration of ripe, dark fruit, balanced by beautifully fine tannins seductive textures on the palate. Dominique Le Guen is a rising star of Chambolle-Musigny and his style of winemaking is muscular and concentrated, but the elegance of the tannins and complex layering of aromas gives this vintage a particular finesse that we think our customers will love.
The hot weather in 2020 produced average yields of just 33 hl/ha. Despite the challenges, Dominique said that the fruit was in such perfect condition that 'there was nothing to do but stand and supervise'. The tone of our cask tasting was set by the Bourgogne Pinot Noir, which had a fresh acidity that gave wonderful energy to the intense black and red fruit. Dominque pointed out that the harvest for the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits fruit was ten days later than the other wines, due to the cooler situation, which produced a violet character on the nose, adding some layers to what is often a rustic, powerful red.
The Chambolle Vieilles Vignes was also perfumed, with rose petal aromas and the supplest of tannins. Of the premiers crus, Les Charmes is often the easier wine to taste, but this year Les Charmes and Les Cras were equally beguiling; Les Charmes for its succulence and elegance, Les Cras for its mineral style, with a finer balance than in previous years. The same was true of Les Borniques (which we think is nudging at grand cru status) with its massive structure refined by polished, supple tannins.
Sadly, quantities are extremely limited, so do please let us know as soon as possible if you would like to add any of these to your cellar.
Offered En Primeur, wines due to land in the UK in autumn 2022.

Tasting Notes"The 2020 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a more powerful bouquet compared to the Bourgogne Rouge with cassis and violet scents bursting from the glass. The palate is well balanced with caressing tannins, fine weight and acidity, rounded with a touch of baking powder on the finish. Fine. 86-88 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"A brooding and timid nose grudgingly reflects notes of dark currant, pungent earth and a whiff of spice. By contrast, there is fine verve to the delicious and intense middle weight flavors that exude a bracing salinity on the racy, refreshing and linear finish. One to consider. Outstanding. 86-89 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound |

Tasting Notes"A very ripe nose speaks primarily of poached plum, dark currant, spice and the barest whisper of oak. There is again good density and punch to the saline-suffused medium-bodied flavors that are supported by bright acidity and firm tannins on the lingering and slightly warm finale. 89-92 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound-----"The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru is very pure on the nose, quite intense like the Vieilles Vignes with verging on ostentatious black cherry and cassis fruit, very floral and not shy in the slightest. The palate restores order with some gorgeous red berry fruit, slightly gourmand in style, almost gamey towards the finish that feels very long. Succulent ‘n sexy. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes"Ripe and reasonably layered aromas of poached plum, spice and dark currant complement the nicely rich and voluminous flavors that possess excellent punch if limited refinement as the firm and almost chewy finish is borderline rustic. Delicious but not particularly Chambollesque. 87-90 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------"The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes, from 60 to 80-year old vines, has a powerful bouquet with ebullient dark cherry, violet and cassis notes, a hint of melted chocolate in the background. The palate is well balanced, quite intense with sappy black cherry and boysenberry fruit vying for attention on the finish. You get the feeling this is holding something in reserve so give it 5-6 years in the cellar. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |
