Our Top White Burgundy Offers In Bond

2021 was a frost vintage in Burgundy, with figures of 30-70% reduction in the harvest being commonplace at domaines on the Côte d'Or and in Chablis (see our harvest report, here).  We expect to see drastic reductions in allocations and sharp price rises, particularly for white burgundy.

To help prepare you as well as possible, we are paying special attention to the availability of recent vintages of white burgundy (mostly 2017-2020) and will offer these here, on an ad hoc basis, as they become available.  We recommend planning ahead for the next couple of years and filling your cellar now with good white burgundy, particularly with wines with ageing potential.

As land and wine prices in the region rise, small growers are expending ever more care and expense to produce the best wines from the best sites in less well-known areas: For instance, at the southern and northern extremes of the Côte d'Or, on the Hâutes-Côtes (where more elevated, cooler slopes are coming into their own in the recent hot summers), and in the Côte Chalonnaise and the Maconnais.  From the best growers, these wines of 'Greater Bourgogne' can be spectacular and this is a great opportunity to make new discoveries.

2019 Meursault 1er Cru Blagny, Domaine Matrot £330 per six in bond

If we had to choose our desert island wines, this would be one of them.  Domaine Matrot is in the hamlet of Blagny, high on the slopes overlooking Meursault itself and on the border with Puligny.  We first visited here in the late nineties and had a memorable dinner with Thierry and his wife Pascale, along with their two young daughters Adèle and Elsa.

Thierry was an early adopter of the "lutte raisonee" approach to reducing the use of herbicides and pesticides, which were widely overused during the sixties.  The wines stood out for us at this time with their wonderful purity and minerality.  In part, this is the style of Blagny wines, but in those days Thierry was also moving toward a more modern style of winemaking, with less new oak influence than some of his peers.  At nearby Domaine Michelot, for instance, the style at this time was still very much leaning towards rich, buttery, and heavily oaked.

Adèle and Elsa are now in their thirties and have taken over the running of the domaine.  We have tasted the wines at every opportunity over the intervening years and although quality has continued to rise, there is something still instantly recognizable that shouts both Blagny and Matrot.  The 2019 Meursault 1er Cru 'Blagny' saw no new oak, being aged in 1-5 year barrels, allowing the fruit and mineral, saline character of this terroir to sing.  Just beginning to drink well now, it will improve greatly with another year or two in bottle and will cellar for a decade with ease.

This is a Meursault for lovers of Puligny, but more than that it is for anyone who loves great white burgundy.  Matrot's wines have never joined the coterie of Meursault producers like Lafon, Arnaud Ente and Coche-Dury, whose wines command stratospheric prices, but occupy a niche just below, far more interesting to us, where the wines are of the highest quality but are still relatively affordable.  Please email us to secure some for your cellar.

Offered in bond, available December 2022.

"Pale lemon and lime. A more restrained nose, far from the madding crowd of 2019, this Meursault-Blagny has kept its freshness. It offers greater tensile strength than the village Meursault, but not significantly more volume.  Lemon apple finish.  90-93 points".  Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Tasting NotesThis gives a sense of great density on the nose but then also has impressive tension on the palate. The fruit character is of white stone fruits with lots of delicate floral complexity, but the overall effect is of a very ripe and rich style. RKL "The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet of orange blossom, freshly sliced pear and light nectarine aromas, plus a hint of praline in the background. The palate is well balanced with a honeyed opening, quite rich in style, and yet there is wonderful tension. Appealing tropical notes of passion fruit and guava on the finish. Tasting NotesThe 1.15-hectare Les Perrières vineyard is situated to the south of the amphitheatre, on mid-slope just beneath the parcel of Le Clos. Exposed south-south-east, the slope here is steeper than it is on the Clos. The vineyard was planted in 1972-1974. The soil, which is derived from alluvial deposits, consists of a mix of deep silt and stony clay. The subsoil features streaks of limestone and limestone marls, while the top layers are littered with stones on the surface. Fermentation and elevage are handled as for the Clos des Prouges. The 2020 vintage will be bottled in February 2022.------"Here too the wood treatment is more prominent still with notes of vanilla and toast fighting a bit with the ripe aromas of poached pear and anise. There is impressive size, weight and power to the bigger and equally generously proportioned flavors that brim with both dry extract and minerality before culminating in an elegant but powerful finish. Patience advised here too. 2027+. 91-93 points." Allen Meadows, Burghound, Issue 84------"This wine is from east-facing vines behind Mme. Ferret’s house, and is thus called by the domaine ‘Clos de Jeanne’ although it is in premier cru Les Perrières. It delivers a substantial wine; here the cask ferment (20% new) is more apparent, yet it holds this will and shows approachably toasty ripe apple aromas. There is abundant extract here but the wine remains impressively fresh and lingers seductively on the finish. 92 points." Charles Curtis MW, Decanter------“The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Perrières 1er Cru has a very focused, almost steely bouquet, beautifully defined with neatly integrated oak. White flowers emerge with time in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and wonderful salinity with a vibrant and energetic finish. I cannot wait to taste the finished wine. 91-93 points.” Neal Martin, Neal Martin, Vinous.com, Nov 21

Tasting Notes"The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 1er Cru has a very harmonious bouquet, fine mineralité and tension, focused and displaying impressive energy. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity quite complex and poised with just the right amount of bitterness on the finish to urge you back. Very fine. This should age with style. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"Fullish, yellowish colour, while the bouquet shows a fair amount of oak. The full weight of Morgeot is lurking. It all works though. If you want a white Burgundy with significant volume of flesh without forcing the ripeness too far, this will do the job. Just the right balance here. Tasted: November 2021 91-94 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com------"One of the standouts of the range is the 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot (Domaine Louis Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless wine evocative of pear, orange oil and pastry cream. Bright and chalky, it's beautifully balanced and built to age. 92-94 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com

Tasting NotesFrom younger vines in the lower, northern part of Santenay and is mostly a young vine cuvée. The vineyard is planted with 3% of a chardonnay clone which gives a rich style with almost Muscat-like aromas. The finished style is similar to Chassagne-Montrachet with lots of richness and texture, presumably influenced by the use of lees stirring and ageing in 30% new wood. Balanced citrus and yuzu fruit on the nose, lovely fresh acidity balancing the concentration, some white flowers, tangerines on the palate. Quite different to the tropical notes and glyecrine-texture from some recent vintages of Gravieres. Good energy. RKL

Tasting Notes"Still in barrel, to be racked and assembled at the harvest and bottled next spring. Fresh mid yellow colour. Here the oak shows in the form of coconut. Drink 2025 – 2038. 17 points" jancisrobinson.com------"While moderate there is enough wood to notice on the more floralsuffused nose of just sliced pear and citrus. There is excellent volume to the succulent and enveloping medium weight flavors that possess solid mid-palate concentration before terminating in a clean and mouthcoating finish where a hint of bitter lemon appears. This distinctly powerful and beautifully persistent effort should effortlessly repay a decade plus of keeping yet it’s not so structured that it couldn’t be approached after 5-ish years. 2031+. 91-93 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound

Tasting Notes"Aromas of lime zest, freshly baked bread, pear, white flowers and wet stones preface the 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a full-bodied, ample and satiny wine that's chalky and structured, with notable concentration, racy acids and a long, resonant finish. It's a very strong performance that transcends any of the vintage's limitations. 93-95+ points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"(from Les Pougets in Aloxe-Corton). Cooler and airier aromas include those of mostly green apple, mineral reduction, crushed fennel and white flowers. There is almost painful intensity to the beautifully textured if slightly less concentrated medium-bodied flavors that exude a pungent stoniness on the tautly muscular, moderately austere and bone-dry finale that goes on and on. It’s rare that the Jadot CC appears more interesting than the Demoiselles but at this very early juncture, it seems to have a slight edge. Either way, this is terrific. 2033+. 93-96 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound

Quite a bit to chew on. Drink 2025 – 2034. 16.5+ points" jancisrobinson.com------"There is a touch of lemon zest on the aromas of mostly apple, petrol and white floral wisps. There is once again outstanding density to the more refined if less mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the moderately austere but not especially dry finale that exhibits sneaky good length. This promising if mildly edgy effort should repay mid to even longer-term keeping. 2029+. 89-92 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound

There is excellent delineation and vibrancy to the refined and understated middleweight flavors that are almost aggressively mineral-driven, all wrapped in a moderately austere, compact and serious finale. Tasting NotesEach time we taste this it evokes comparisons with Meursault. From younger vines in the northern part of Santenay, at a lower elevation, hence riper in style than Sous La Roche. This is mostly a young vine cuvée but from complex soils. Soft and plush on the palate, balanced by salinity, immediately noticeable, and lots of citrus fruit. More layered and complex, with a note of iodine on the finish. The salty-iodine character note and fresh acidity are a counterpoint to the ripeness. RKL

Tasting NotesThe 'Sous La Roche' lieu-dit is a small vineyard, less than half a hectare, quite high up on the slopes above the village of Santenay. The grapes are passed through a gentle pneumatic press at low pressure soon after harvesting. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at very low temperatures, in barrel, with particular emphasis on lees management, which contributes roundness and complexity of aroma. The wine spends 12 to 15 months in cask, 20-25% new, with regular bâtonnage until malolactic starts. Delightful freshness and citrus fruit on the nose, quite intense, really nice energy, glycerine texture, full-on attack, then gradually diminishes the on mid-palate, reasserting itself on the finish. Very good balancing acidity keeping the whole impression fresh, with a bit of salinity on the finish. RKL

Tasting NotesFrom a walled vineyard in Bouzeron, owned entirely by the Borgeots, hence this is a monopole for the domaine. 20% new oak this year, due to the need to lay in more barrels for the larger '22 vintage. The fruit from Clos Carbonade is able to balance the oak, with aromas of ozone-freshness, pear and strawberry (yes, a red fruit aroma). A lovely creamy texture to the palate. RKL

Tasting NotesThe Borgeots have excellent holdings in Chassagne, with Chardonnay vines up to 60 years old, producing low yields of very concentrated fruit. The elevage is in up to 25% new oak. Intense green apple and some citrus on the nose, struck-match aromas, taut on the palate, flavours of perfectly red ripe-skinned apple and pear, lemon pith texture, hints of woodsmoke and crushed rock on the finish. Tasting NotesLes Jardins is fermented and aged in oak, with just 10% new and the remainder up to ten years old; so the effect is more about micro-oxygenation and giving the wine texture on the palate. The vines face North North-East, so catch the morning sun more than the afternoon. This gives Les Jardins and cool, crisp character with elevated acidity. Pithy lemon texture, fine citrus fruits with lots of delicacy and purity. The direct, vivid style of the wine captures both the terroir and Armand's bright personality. A very good vintage for Les Jardins. Drinking from 2025-2032. RKL

Tasting NotesIntense, smoky, flinty minerality and fine citrus, stone fruit and floral notes on the nose. The palate has the distinctive lemon-pith texture and flavour often found in Chamilly's whites. Very fine and balancing acidity. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, this has great precision and purity of fruit, like a riper version of Chablis. Drink from late-2024. RKL

Tasting NotesThe Clos St Felix is a walled vineyard directly adjoining the winery. Nicolas' grandfather used to tell the story of how he knew this was a warmer site than the surrounding vineyards. As a young man during the occupation, he would come home from visiting his girlfriend on cold winter nights after curfew. Hopping over the wall into the Clos St Felix, he would immediately notice the warmer temperatures! The 2022 has lots of flint and iodine on the nose and the same roundness and texture on the palate, but it is more focused and linear too, with very fine acidity. More intense on the finish, with excellent length. RKL------"Pale in colour, perhaps a lemon tint. Reductive on the nose which is hiding the fruit. I can pick up greater intensity compared to Sous la Velle, but the reduction hides it a little. Oyster shells at the finish, unexpectedly. Drink from 2027-2033. 89-92 points." Tasting NotesTremendous power but also super-smooth. As we have said before, if Meursault had a grand cru, it would be Genevrières, as demonstrated by the depth of concentration and supremely long finish. RKL------"Pale lemon in colour. At first sniff the Genevrières is more generous than the Charmes, or at least slightly riper. Herbs and honeysuckle, but with the stones in the background. Sort of like Vaillons in Chablis, this also gives a drier finish on lemon scented stones. An interesting contrast to the Charmes. Lovely aftertaste. My first sniff was misleading. Drink from 2029-2037. 92-95 points." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Tasting NotesTrue to its name, Les Charmes is charming, with a softness to the texture, delicate aromas of white flowers and lovely salinity. The persistence on the palate marks this out as a step up from the preceding wines, with beautiful crushed-rock minerality on the finish. RKL------"Pale colour with a most promising nose, the ample side of Charmes but held in balance, showing the precision of this excellent white wine vintage. This starts well then accelerates with class across the whole of the palate. Not too fleshy, this comes across as quite a refined Meursault Charmes. Drink from 2029-2037. 92-94 points." Tasting NotesThe Grands Charrons vines are at the same elevation as the premier cru vineyards and this would probably be rated at that level, but for the cool winds that come from the valley of Auxey-Duresses, lowering the temperature a fraction. Pronounced iodine and saline notes, soft and floral on the palate, with a distinctive roundness. This is a great year for terroir expression, the subtle differences between sites is so clear. RKL "Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet is more generous in fruit with a light floral note as well. Immediately explosive fruit but well poised on the palate, a light touch of mineral bitterness to finish, and medium plus length., even slightly saline at the finish. Plenty to build on here. Tasting NotesFrom ten parcels around the village. The Mestre's aim with this wine is to blend the various components to make a wine that is as representative of the village as possible. Few domaines have such an array of terroirs at their disposal, so this wine is one of the best exemplars of the village. 80% barrel fermented and aged, half in barrique and half in 500l casks. The remaining 20% is made in ceramic 'eggs' and glass globes. Nicolas is continually experimenting with these vessels to give texture to the wines, whilst allowing them to express their terrroir. Intense flint and struck match aromas, some saline notes on the palate, balancing a soft, rounded texture. Lovely savoury hazelnut character. RKL------"Pale colour with a touch of sulphur on the nose, certainly more tension. Starts well and then builds, with predominantly fresh apple notes, the fruit covering the wood and becoming more complex than expected further back on the palate. Drink from 2026-2031. 89-92 points." Builds slowly on the mid-palate, expanding to show impressive breadth. Lime fruit, minerality and salinity on the very long finish. RKL------"Pale lemon yellow. This is quite backward but with greater energy at the back of the palate. Some greener floral notes along with fresh yellow fruit. Good tension, still a baby, but showing promise. Tasting NotesValmur is high up on the slopes and despite the excellent ripeness, the altitude gives a cool expression to the fruit, even in warmer years. The terroir consists of a complex mixture of Portlandian scree and Kimmeridgian limestone. Fermented and aged in 100% oak barrels, from 1-3 years old. This has very rich fruit aromas, including grapefruit and even guava, but still has a focused line of acidity. Excellent intensity on nose and palate, impossible to mistake this for anything other than a grand cru. This needs 8-10 years to show its full potential (though it will be delicious after around 4!). RKL------"Still in barrel, will rack before the harvest. Pale green tint in the colour, while the wood shows on the nose for the moment. As much a suggestion of coconut as vanilla. There is a greener note to the fruit which enhances the Chablisian style, then a wealth of pure white fruit before the wood returns to bolster the finish. Plenty of energy here without too overt an opulence. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: July 2023. 92-94 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

Tasting NotesFrom just under two hectares of vines in Auxey, averaging 30 years of age, on clay-limestone. The Auxey goes through the same winemaking process as the Bourgogne Côte d'Or, so the additional weight and concentration here is all down to terroir. Saline, mineral and full of energy, with a sweet-sour chracter to the fruit. Auxey is adjacent to Meursault and there is some of that villages richness here. Alexandra commented that Auxey is usually the last area they harvest (being a slightly cooler area) and this has probably helped the 2022 reach this full, intense expression. Beautiful salinity on the long finish. RKL

The energy of this wine is what stands out above all else. An excellent vintage, from one of the top sites in Puligny, from a producer at the top of their game. RKL------"Riper and more intense than Les Enseignères. Lemon and a touch of apricot. Rich and creamy on the palate, too; the fruit just balanced by the chalky texture and fresh acidity. Tasting NotesIntense aromas of hazelnut and citrus fruit on the nose with a backdrop of toast and spice from the oak. Has a lovely savoury quality on the palate, beautifully balanced and with a persistent finish. Benoit pointed out that, following the small harvest in 2021, he needed to buy in more new oak barrels than usual for the larger 2022 vintage. The Merucrey Village has benefited from this, with the oak giving impressive structure. RKL------"Smells riper and creamier than the Aligoté. Tasting NotesLovely freshness, zippy acidity, citrus lemon, balancing the 15% new oak, more freshness than in recent vintages. Sam says the warm weather at harvest made it a challenge to keep the white grapes fresh, requiring a fast picking. The pH is similar to '22 but it is more noticeable on the palate, with a higher proportion of tartaric acid retained in the finished wine (whereas malic acid is lost during the malolactic). This has a great balance of richness, subtle oak influence and freshness. RKL

There is a definite bitterness. Still, youthful promise. The barrel component, from clay-limestone soils includes some 1er Cru grapes as a counterpoint to the schist, and a bit of fruit from Vergisson. Pale lemon in colour without the green, a slightly richer and softer nose, more evidently Pouilly-Fuissé. Fresh plum fruit, balanced and delicious. My assessment may be over cautious. Tasting NotesBased in the northern part of Fuissé, just on the borders of the hamlet of Pouilly, the Tournant de Pouilly is a vineyard of one hectare in area, split between two parcels, planted on a gentle slope that faces north-east. This historic vineyard is a part of 1er Cru "Les Reisses". Planted by Jean-Alfred Ferret in 1995, 1963 and 1964, the vines from this parcel are, on average, a little bit older than 60 years old, one of the oldest vineyards owned by the Domaine.------This deep clay loam soil contains lots of limestone, but little in the way of stones. It is derived from the pale loams of the Dogger. Fermentations and ageing take place in casks: 25% of new cask, 75% of cask from 1 to 3 wines for 10 months. The ageing continued in stainless steel tanks, always with all their lees for another 9 months. Bottled just like the Ménétrières, at the very last days of March 2022. Always a bit austere and shy at first glance, it is undoubtedly the most "chic" of the selections with its chalky touch and its fresh and persistent finish." J.A. Ferret------This has the beautiful texture on the palate that seems to characterise the '23s, not the rich glycerin kind as seen in the '22s, but a more elegant, silkiness. It balances richness with a chalky minerality and the longest finish of this flight of wines. RKL
