2022 Roc de Cambes: Release expected May 2023.
Francois Mitjavile's 2022 Châteaux Le Tertre Rôteboeuf, Roc de Cambes and Domaine de Cambes have just been released and are once again among our favourite wines of the vintage. Like music, they defy description in writing and the only way to get to know them will be to taste them for yourself, assuming you can secure some! Stock is even more limited than usual and we will sell out almost instantly.
Mitjavile is a charming winemaking genius and our tastings with him are always a highlight. This year, the dimly-lit rustic cellar at Le Tertre Rôteboeuf was even more chaotic than usual, with the feel of a salon, Francois holding court to little groups of merchants from different countries as they came and went.
His account of the 2022 vintage was similar in most respects to the one we heard elsewhere, but his explanation of why it was such a success was unique, if slightly opaque to us, focusing on the properties of his vines, their resilience to drought, and the obsessive care with which he tended to the leaf canopy and cover crops.
The points awarded to these wines never do them justice. They operate on a different value scale to their peers, with subtlety, nuance, and a 'wild' character being some of the key qualities.
2022 Château Roc de Cambes and Domaine de Cambes are almost, but not quite, as limited in availability as Le Tertre Rôteboeuf and we recommend them as your introduction to Mitjavile's inimitable style.

Tasting Notes"The 2022 Roc de Cambes is a wid, exotic wine that cuplures all the natural intensity of the year Super-ripe black cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, licorice, lavender and hard candy all race out of the glass. The 2022 is pretty exuberant, so readers should expect a flamboyant wine that approaches the sort of richness that is often found in the flagship Tertre Roteboeuf. Roc de Cambes is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. 91-93 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com------"Mingling aromas of sweet cherries and cassis with notions of licorice, espresso roast and spices, the 2022 Roc de Cambes is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a broad-shouldered profile, framed by powdery tannins, and concluding with a chalky finish. This is always the most structured wine in the Mitjaville portfolio. 92-94 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"The 2022 Roc de Cambes displays a very perfumed bouquet with black cherries and blueberry fruit, more floral than the Domaine des Cambes, iris and peony. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and clove. Hints of iron toward the spicy finish. Very fine. 92-94 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"A bigger, riper, sexier wine, the 2022 Roc De Cambes just about jumps out of the glass with its exotic red and blue fruits as well as vanilla bean, sweet spice, and acacia flower-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has beautiful tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It shows the riper, opulent style of the vintage, yet it has a core of ripe tannins and mid-palate depth that keeps it nicely focused and balanced. It's a gorgeous wine that's unfortunately hard to find in the market. 93-95 points" Jebdunnuck.com |
