2021 Mountain Blanco, Telmo Rodriguez

"Fascinating and complex...17 points."  (JH), Jancisrobinson.com

"Christie's, in its first wine auction in 1769, offered wines from Malaga along with the best Rhine and Burgundy."  Telmo Rodriguez

The 2021 'Mountain Blanco' from innovative Spanish winemaker Telmo Rodriguez has just scored 17 points from Jancisrobinson.com's Julia Harding MW and been selected as her 'Wine of the Week'.  It's a great value dry white at £180 per dozen in bond and brings to life a historic and once-famous wine style.

We can remember reading about the 'Mountain Wine' from Málaga in Hugh Johnson's 'The Story of Wine' when we were first learning about the subject.  In its sweet version, it was as prized as Tokaji, and enjoyed by Catherine the Great.

In 1995, Rioja winemaker Telmo Rodríguez set out to revive Mountain Wine, renovating vineyards in the winemaking villages of Cómpeta and Archez. Planted with Moscatel (Muscat of Alexandria) the vineyards are up to 100 years old and sit at a cool 550 to 1000m.

Mountain Wine was traditionally sweet, but Rodriguez and his French winemaker David Dupuch decided to make a dry version.  The result is first and foremost an energetic dry white with fresh fruit and herbal aromas, concentrated stone and citrus fruit on the palate and an electrifying, saline finish.  It also has ageing ability and Julia Harding MW finds it has lots of complexity to offer, making this a find to enjoy not just this summer, but over the next 2-3 years and possibly beyond.

This is great value at just £15 per bottle in bond, so we recommend adding some to your cellar.  Please simply email us if you would like to order.

Offered in bond, available for delivery in September 2024.

Tasting Notes"Intense grapey aroma, but also wild herbs and vibrant green fruits. On the day after opening there's a slight fumey/herbal aroma, not unlike spontaneously fermented Riesling. Bone dry but gives a slight impression of sweetness because of the grapey character. Full and generous in the mouth, almost viscous, but still surprisingly fresh. Intense, long, and aromatic on the palate. This may not appeal to everyone but it's a classic wine of the region, even if the dry style is less usual. Fascinating and complex. I am not sure how this will age so I have been rather cautious in my suggested drinking window. 17 points. 'Wine of the Week', 16th Aug 2024" (JH) Jancisrobinson.com
