Burgundy 2023 En Primeur: First impressions from our visit

Last week we made our annual autumn pilgrimage to Burgundy, to taste the latest vintage from barrel.  The 2023 wines were a wonderful surprise, far higher in quality and exciting to taste than we had anticipated.  The white wines are ripe but beautifully fresh, slightly less concentrated than the '22s, but with more texture and balance.  The reds are delightful to taste, with exceptionally supple tannins, immediate but also age-worthy.  Best of all, both reds and whites were especially representative of their terroirs this year, something you don't see so readily in hotter years.

2023 also produced an abundant harvest, even more so than 2022.  With the 2024 harvest drastically reduced in size, this year's en primeur campaign represents an excellent opportunity to secure stocks of your favourite wines.

Fresh and supple are the bywords for the 2023 vintage

The 2023 growing season was unusual in recent times, in so far as there were no extreme weather events!  Spring frosts were largely avoided, mildew pressure was moderated by airflow and not an issue for most, and temperatures, although warm, did not see the heat spikes that characterised 2022.  The conditions were so favourable that many producers carried out a green harvest, reducing the volume of the crop by removing a proportion of unripe fruit from the vines.

The autumn ripening period saw some beautiful weather, but although temperatures were in the mid-30s by day, by night they cooled significantly.  Most producers harvested in the first 2-3 weeks of September.  Rain in the Côte de Nuits around 16-18 September was a key decision point, with some growers opting to delay harvesting until after the rains had passed.

The white wines

For us, the white wines were consistent in offering beautifully ripe fruit, with an attractive texture.  In hotter years such as 2020 and '22 the texture can come from glycerin, but not so in this new vintage.  The warm autumn meant that growers picked early, to preserve ripeness, leaving plenty of malic acid to be converted in lactic acid during the malo-lactic fermentation, giving a supple, sometimes creamy texture.  The perception of alcohol on the palate is also notably low, giving the white wines a weightless quality.  At least one grower compared the '23 white wines to the superb 2017s, but with more fruit concentration.  The distinct terroirs of each vineyard were beautifully delineated, particularly in Puligny-Montrachet.

The red wines

The reds were among the most immediate and approachable we have tasted from barrel, even at the level of the grands crus.  The fruit concentration may be a notch lower than in the 22s, but we found more red fruit character, more acidity, more balance, and more precise expression of terroirs.  Tasting at domaines like Joseph Voillot in Volnay and Hudelot-Baillet in Chambolle, the wines were generous but with nothing excessive about them.  The acidity and tannins will ensure they age beautifully.

The case for 2023 Burgundy

2022 and 2023 are both beautiful and plentiful vintages, bookended by 2021 and 2024, which were severely reduced in quantity.  The very best wines (at every price level) will most likely sell out this year.  Whilst the market for the top dozen domaines (DRC et al) has been overheated and seen prices falling, this does not apply to the artisan domaines that are the focus of our offer.  Wines like those from Michelot in Meursault and the Santenays from Borgeot and Bachey-Legros are extraordinarily good value, in their context.

We expect to offer the 2023 wines between now and January, as our allocations are confirmed.  You will find all of the releases on our Burgundy 2023 homepage.

Tasting NotesLovely freshness, zippy acidity, citrus lemon, balancing the 15% new oak, more freshness than in recent vintages. Sam says the warm weather at harvest made it a challenge to keep the white grapes fresh, requiring a fast picking. The pH is similar to '22 but it is more noticeable on the palate, with a higher proportion of tartaric acid retained in the finished wine (whereas malic acid is lost during the malolactic). This has a great balance of richness, subtle oak influence and freshness. RKL

Tasting NotesWe did not taste the 1er Cru Les Morgeots this year (running out of time to get to our next appointment in Meursault) but based on tasting the 2023 village Chassagne, plus previous experience of tasting Les Morgeots, this should be superb this year. Sam says this plot is on deep clay and limestone soils, giving power and depth. RKL

Tasting NotesMaranges is the most southern of the Côtes de Beaune villages and is still less well-known by UK burgundy drinkers, which means it is a great source of excellent-value wines. This has a lovely fresh nose, with the 20% new oak just adding a touch of weighty richness, but it's still fresh. Then there is some lovely reductive struck-match and flinty mineral character on the palate, with ripe citrus fruits. V. good. RKL

Tasting NotesFrom younger vines in the northern part of Santenay, at a lower elevation, hence riper in style than Sous La Roche. This is mostly a young vine cuvée but from complex soils. Intense but delicate, understated, fine-boned, unfolding on the palate with a salty character, iodine minerality, and a pithy texture. Grilled nuts and lemons and a really long finish. A complex premier cru to compete with many whites from Meursaults and Chassagnes. Lovely. RKL

Santenay Blanc Sous La Roche

IB
Tasting NotesThe 'Sous La Roche' lieu-dit is a small vineyard, less than half a hectare, quite high up on the slopes above the village of Santenay. The grapes are passed through a gentle pneumatic press at low pressure soon after harvesting. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at very low temperatures, in barrel, with particular emphasis on lees management, which contributes roundness and complexity of aroma. The wine spends 12 to 15 months in cask, 20% new, with regular bâtonnage until malolactic starts. The 2023 has elegant white flowers and crystalline fruit on the nose, really fresh and fine, some reductive matchstick aromas, flinty minerality on the palate, and a quite grippy, assertive core of fruit, with concentrated lemon flavours and a squeeze of lemony acidity and saltiness on the finish. Tasting NotesFrom vines planted in 1935. A great all-round village-level red burgundy with some good weight to it. South exposure, deep soils with chalk. Adjacent to the town of Santenay itself and surrounded by premier cru vineyards! Ink-dark in the glass, lovely dark fruit, blackcurrant and minty freshness, then cherry, blackcurrant and dark plum fruit on the palate, spicy finish. Clos des Hâtes has always been a sweet spot in the range, but this year shows just how good it is. RKL

Tasting Notes"Les Fourneaux" is a lieu-dit within the Clos Rousseau Premier Cru, one of the Santenay's best sites. Most of the vineyard was planted in 1914! Immediate, expressive, with intense dark cherry, then sparkling energy on palate, the tannins providing wonderful energy and length. The finish is truly impressive. RKL

Tasting NotesThe Clos Rousseau premier cru is the most prized location in Santenay, to the south, close to Maranges, on complex marl and limestone soils. Dark, powerful and intense, deep dark fruit, black cherry, earth, then super fine dark cherry palate, supple tannins, more fruit with deliclious concentration, exceptional length and minerality. A beautiful and very complete wine. RKL

Tasting NotesLa Comme is right on the border with Chassagne-Montrachet. Some graphite or iron aromas, with more dark cherry, inky, violet, more taut and drying on palate than Clos Rousseau, giving elegance. Smoky, gamey fruit. Excellent. RKL

Tasting NotesThe Champs Claude lieu-dit is on the Chassagne side of Santenay, with more deep, red oxide soils. Grippier than Les Charmes, a 'bloody wine' says Sam, as we taste! The aromas of rust or iron or blood are very distinct. Very dry palate with powerful tannins, this will develop beautifully with 2-4 years in bottle. RKL

Tasting NotesThis is also on the southern (Maranges) end of Santenay. Fine aromas of strawberry fruits, earth and wood smoke, but still with lovely weight on the palate, chewy tannins, richness, some chocolate, kirsch flavours. Very much in the style of the domaine, black fruit, but balanced. Some saline and cacao notes on the finish. RKL

Tasting NotesFrom a walled vineyard in Bouzeron, owned entirely by the Borgeots, hence this is a monopole for the domaine. 20% new oak this year, due to the need to lay in more barrels for the larger '22 vintage. The fruit from Clos Carbonade is able to balance the oak, with aromas of ozone-freshness, pear and strawberry (yes, a red fruit aroma). A lovely creamy texture to the palate. RKL

Tasting Notes"This wine starts life in a mix of tank and barrel. The tank component, which includes the vines on schistous soils in one part of Fuissé, shows some green tints to the colour, with an attractive fruit both lively and juicy. There is a definite bitterness. Still, youthful promise. The barrel component, from clay-limestone soils includes some 1er Cru grapes as a counterpoint to the schist, and a bit of fruit from Vergisson. Pale lemon in colour without the green, a slightly richer and softer nose, more evidently Pouilly-Fuissé. Fresh plum fruit, balanced and delicious. My assessment may be over cautious. Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted Apr 2024. 89-90 points." Jasper Morris MW

Tasting Notes"Autour de la Roche', formerly known as 'Sous Vergisson' is a blend of grapes grown in the best terroirs located around the Vergisson outcrop. The average age of the vines that go into cuvee is around 40 years. As is typical in Fuissé, the geology is diverse, with some stony soils but, in the main, soils derived from Triassic sandstones and clay, as well as shallower soils based on hard limestones with marine fossils. Tasting NotesSituated right in the centre of the village of Fuissé, this Clos is just over two "hectares" in size and is planted on a shallow slope that faces east. Although a small parcel of vines was planted in 2003, most of the vineyard dates back to 1956, and is therefore more than 60 years old, making it one of the oldest owned by the domaine. The soil is derived from limestone-rich marls deposited during the upper Bathonian. The 2023 has an intense, fine backbone of acidity, spice, pear and lime-fruit freshness running through it, with excellent minerality providing length on the finish. RKL

Tasting Notes"Formerly known as Le Clos. A lime green touch, with a subtly perfumed bouquet. A mix of fresh plum fruit with some more austere notes, extra length. Tasting NotesBased in the northern part of Fuissé, just on the borders of the hamlet of Pouilly, the Tournant de Pouilly is a vineyard of one hectare in area, split between two parcels, planted on a gentle slope that faces north-east. This historic vineyard is a part of 1er Cru "Les Reisses". Planted by Jean-Alfred Ferret in 1995, 1963 and 1964, the vines from this parcel are, on average, a little bit older than 60 years old, one of the oldest vineyards owned by the Domaine.------This deep clay loam soil contains lots of limestone, but little in the way of stones. It is derived from the pale loams of the Dogger. Fermentations and ageing take place in casks: 25% of new cask, 75% of cask from 1 to 3 wines for 10 months. The ageing continued in stainless steel tanks, always with all their lees for another 9 months. Bottled just like the Ménétrières, at the very last days of March 2022. Always a bit austere and shy at first glance, it is undoubtedly the most "chic" of the selections with its chalky touch and its fresh and persistent finish." J.A. Ferret------This has the beautiful texture on the palate that seems to characterise the '23s, not the rich glycerin kind as seen in the '22s, but a more elegant, silkiness. It balances richness with a chalky minerality and the longest finish of this flight of wines. RKL

Tasting Notes(Heritiers Louis Jadot) "A full ruby to crimson. The bouquet makes a statement, more savoury than sucrosity. The Corton Pougets has fine depth too, with tannins, but all this will come together. The quality of pinot is excellent and there is an element of throwback in the style Tasted Oct 2024. 91-94 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

Tasting Notes(Domaine) "A pretty paler ruby, with an engaging fresh cherry bouquet, this is all about delicacy and finesse yet with a proper backbone, and persistence. Not the most nuanced but overall fine and typical. Tasted Oct 2024. 93-96 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

Tasting Notes(Domaine) "The darkest colour of the three wines from the St-Jacques sector, and the most sombre in fruit. But there is a great deal of it, and it fills the mouth comprehensively. Very backward, quite firm tannins, and while I could use a bit more liveliness I expect that will come later. Tasted Oct 2024. 93-96 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

Tasting Notes(Domaine) "What a wealth of fruit is there, plus a streak of nervous energy, this is very well done. Always late to pick here but it hasn’t disturbed the fresh energy while optimising the fruit volume. Very good indeed. Tasted Oct 2024. 92-95 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

Tasting Notes(Domaine Heritiers) "Mid yellow. Class and weight on the nose. These vines are situated very close to the Clos de la Garenne so the comparison is interesting. Heightened ripe fruit, definitely some fresh apricot, but adequate acidity and in no danger of toppling over. Tasted Oct 2024. 91-93 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com
