We are delighted to offer the newly released 2022 vintage from Château de Chamilly in the Côte Chalonnaise. Their Montagny 'Les Reculerons' and Montagny 'Les Jardins' 1er Cru are some of the best affordable white burgundies we know. From a beautiful estate, even by Burgundian standards, these are wines that express both their terroir and the utterly charming personality of the people who make them...so there's very little not to like!
The Château de Chamilly was built in the 17th century, on the foundations of an earlier 14th-century manor. Owned since the 19th century by the Desfontaine family, for many years it was run as a mixed farm, producing cattle and grain.
Brothers Arnaud and Xavier Desfontaine now run the domaine with their mother Veronique. The ongoing restoration of the (charmingly) run-down château is a constant battle. The brothers work tirelessly to improve the domaine and do it with great humour and a sense of fun.
The wines are always notably pure and precise when we taste them from barrel, with very little sign of intervention in the winery. They only really show their full quality after a few months in bottle, with delightful, layered and complex notes of fruits, flowers and minerality.
The 2022 Montagny 'Les Reculerons' (£165 per dozen in bond, equivalent to just £19.71 per bottle with all taxes) is from a single 'lieu-dit' vineyard, with clay and flint soils giving the wines a smoky, gun-flint character, as a foil for very ripe fruit on the palate.
The 2022 Montagny 'Les Jardins' 1er Cru (£240 per dozen in bond) is from vines on grey clay and limestone "gryphée", rich with Jurassic fossils. Les Jardins always stands out for its energy, even in hotter vintages.
The brothers also make a very fine single-vineyard Aligoté from the village of Bouzeron, the only village in Burgundy to have its own appellation specifically for white wines made from this grape variety. The 2022 Aligoté 'Les Bouchines' is from vines on limestone-marl soils and is in a unique style...as per the tasting note below. It pairs beautifully with seafood, so we recommend adding a case or two to your order along with the Montagnys.
Offered in bond, landing January 2024.

Tasting NotesLes Jardins is fermented and aged in oak, with just 10% new and the remainder up to ten years old; so the effect is more about micro-oxygenation and giving the wine texture on the palate. The vines face North North-East, so catch the morning sun more than the afternoon. This gives Les Jardins and cool, crisp character with elevated acidity. Pithy lemon texture, fine citrus fruits with lots of delicacy and purity. The direct, vivid style of the wine captures both the terroir and Armand's bright personality. A very good vintage for Les Jardins. Drinking from 2025-2032. RKL |

Tasting NotesIntense, smoky, flinty minerality and fine citrus, stone fruit and floral notes on the nose. The palate has the distinctive lemon-pith texture and flavour often found in Chamilly's whites. Very fine and balancing acidity. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, this has great precision and purity of fruit, like a riper version of Chablis. Drink from late-2024. RKL |
