Producer Profile

Château Poujeaux, Moulis-en-Médoc

Château Poujeaux is an AOC estate in the commune of Moulis-en-Médoc.  In 2003 it was classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel but the property has since opted out of the classification.

For many years owned by the Theil family, it was bought in 2008 by the Philippe Cuvelier, owner of Clos Fourtet in St EmilionMathieu Cuvelier is in charge here and has modernized the estate, which is also moving towards organic and biodynamic production.  Stéphane Derenoncourt is the consultant oenologist.

63 hectares of the 70-hectare estate are planted in a single block to 50 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 % Merlot, 5 % Cabernet Franc and 5 % Petit Verdot, on a rise of Gunzian gravel. Moulis-en-Médoc sits in between Margaux and St-Julien, as you head north from Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes"A polished and complex red with spice, berry and chocolate character. Full body, velvety tannins and a long and intense finish. Better in 2017. 90 points" Jamessuckling.com

Tasting Notes"Solid as a rock this year with blueberries and crushed stones. Dried lavender, too. It’s medium-bodied, yet structured and long. Excellent. 93-94 points" jamessuckling.com------"The 2019 Poujeaux has a more introverted bouquet than some of its Moulis associates, though it opens nicely offering black cherries, liquorice, pressed iris petals and touches of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with insistent grip on the entry. This Poujeaux has good backbone, almost Pauillac-like in style with a dense and persistent finish that augers for a long-term wine that will repay those with the nous to cellar it a few years. Superb. 93-95 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"The 2022 Poujeaux offers up aromas of cassis, plums, pencil shavings and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated palate that opens with a velvety attack, segueing into a firmer, more austere mid-palate and finish that depress my score. If this rounds out with élevage, my review will prove conservative. 88-90 points" William Kelley, RobertParker.com------"The 2022 Poujeaux is very beautiful. Silky, aromatic and elegant, the 2022 is flat-out delicious. Crushed red/purplish berries, mint, blood orange, graphite and spice are all beautifully woven together. Clean mineral notes extend the finish effortlessly. The 2022 is all class. It's as simple as that. 90-92 points" Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com------"The 2022 Poujeaux has a perfumed and delineated bouquet: copious black cherries and blueberry fruit, hints of pressed iris and violets. This blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, very well balanced, impressive focus with fine-grain black fruit. This builds in the mouth. The 2022 Poujeaux certainly repays patience in terms of waiting for the sample to cohere in the glass. Ultimately, everything seems succinctly controlled and, who knows, it may well surpass a delicious magnum of 1953 tasted the previous evening. Tasted three times with consistent notes. 92-94 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"A medium-bodied red with crunchy fruit and tight tannin structure. Juicy acidity coming through. Chewy and solid at the end. Closed and pretty tannins. 94-95 points" jamessuckling.com
