We are delighted to mark the beginning of London Burgundy Week with our offer of the latest 2023 vintage from Hudelot-Baillet. The wines from this highly-rated domaine in Chambolle-Musigny are some of the most sought-after burgundies we offer each year at en primeur and these new releases receive excellent reviews from Vinous, so we recommend ordering without delay.
Neal Martin has just released his report on the 2023 vintage and comments:
"I am hard pushed to think of another vintage so pleasurable from barrel—pleasure that its best growers will translate into bottle." Neal Martin, Vinous, Jan '25
He describes '23 as a 'winegrowers' vintage', with the best producers being those who restricted the natural abundance of the harvest to keep yields low. Winemaker Dominique Le Guen is assisted in the vineyard by his son Tanguy, who told us how green harvesting was used to limit the yield, ensuring the wines have their usual impressive concentration. As an example, the yield for the 2023 Hâutes-Côtes de Nuits was just 45 hl/ha, when the maximum allowed for this classification is 50-69hl/ha.
Picking was done hard and fast here too, another quality factor mentioned by Neal Martin, given the high temperatures in early September. The domaine also has the advantage of vineyards adjacent or semi-adjacent to their winery, allowing them to get the grapes out of the heat and processed before the aroma compounds begin to oxidise. We could detect this when we tasted the wines, in their purity and freshness of on the nose.
One characteristic of the '23s that seemed to come more from the vintage than the winemaker was the suppleness and elegance of the tannins. Hudelot-Baillet's style is usually quite muscular and in some vintages the wines need ageing, but these were supremely approachable, despite the power of the tannins.
Although we visited in November to taste the '23s from barrel, the 2024 vintage was obviously uppermost in Dominique's mind, with the wines still fermenting. He told us that '24 was the most challenging vintage he has experienced, with a final yield of just 22 hl/ha! We may see drastic reductions in allocations this time next year, so our recommendation is to add as much from the '23 vintage to your cellar as you can manage.
Hudelot-Baillet's wines have a strong following amongst our customers and stocks are limited. For the premiers crus, we request balanced orders (1:1 with the village, 1:2 with the Bourgogne or Hautes Côtes). The Bonnes Mares is on allocation, suitably balanced orders requested, please enquire.
Offered En Primeur, wines due to land in the UK in autumn 2025.

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very succinct on the nose. It doesn't race out of the blocks but skulks around like a moody teen, biding its time before offering blackberry, raspberry and forest floor scents. It has fine delineation and I appreciate the restraint. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, lovely balance and poise, plenty of energy and a touch of black pepper toward the finish. What a beautiful Bonnes Mares. 94-96 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge offers crushed strawberry and red plum scents on the nose that needs just a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with nicely integrated 15% new oak lending a silky texture toward the finish. It's easy drinking in the positive sense of that word. 89 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Bourgogne Rouge is a blend from two lieux-dits. It has a vibrant nose with cranberry and wild strawberry fruit in good concentration for a regional wine. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame the fleshy red fruit. Enjoy this well-made red over the next four or five years. 88 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Borniques ler Cru was raised in one- and two-year-old barrels. A mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, it is a little earthier than Les Cras without the same degree of precision. The palate is fresh, crisp and medium-bodied with fine tannins. It's not the most complex Chambolle, yet there is plenty of energy here. Give this two or three years once bottled. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a lively, vibrant, well-defined bouquet with black cherry, raspberry and light herbaceous scents. It will need time in bottle to really gel. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly lactic entry, with hints of dark chocolate infusing the red fruit. It's silky smooth on the finish with perhaps just a soupçon of fig. It leans slightly toward a more exotic style but is still attractive. 90-92 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras ler Cru, matured with 30% new oak, has a little more precision and a touch more mineral drive within the red fruit than Les Charmes. The palate is beautifully balanced, poised and focused with filigree tannins and a keen line of acidity toward the tensile finish. At the moment, this is the best wine from the domaine this year. 93-95 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes, from vines between 60 and 70 years old, has a beautifully defined bouquet with cranberry and wild strawberry fruit scents, sous-bois and neatly integrated 25% new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, sweet black cherries and crushed strawberry scents and a dab of candied orange peel toward the finish. This will be very seductive. 90-92 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com |
