Burgundy 2023 En Primeur

Burgundy 2023 En Primeur

"I am hard pushed to think of another vintage so pleasurable from barrel—pleasure that its best growers will translate into bottle."  Neal Martin, Vinous, Jan '25

In late November we made our annual pilgrimage to Burgundy, to taste the 2023 vintage from barrel.  The wines were a wonderful surprise, far higher in quality and exciting to taste than we had anticipated.  The white wines are ripe but beautifully fresh, slightly less concentrated than the '22s, but with more texture and balance.  The reds are delightful to taste, with exceptionally supple tannins, immediate but also age-worthy.  Best of all, both reds and whites were especially representative of their terroirs this year, something you don't see so readily in hotter years.

2023 also produced a good-sized harvest, similar to 2022.  With the 2024 harvest drastically reduced in size, this year's en primeur campaign represents an excellent opportunity to secure stocks of your favourite wines.

Fresh and supple are the bywords for the 2023 vintage

The 2023 growing season was unusual in recent times, in so far as there were no extreme weather events!  Spring frosts were largely avoided, mildew pressure was moderated by airflow and not an issue for most, and temperatures, although warm, did not see the heat spikes that characterised 2022.  The conditions were so favourable that many producers carried out a green harvest, reducing the volume of the crop by removing a proportion of unripe fruit from the vines.

The autumn ripening period saw some beautiful weather, but although temperatures were in the mid-30s by day, by night they cooled significantly.  Most producers harvested in the first 2-3 weeks of September.  Rain in the Côte de Nuits around 16-18 September was a key decision point, with some growers opting to delay harvesting until after the rains had passed.

The white wines

For us, the white wines were consistent in offering beautifully ripe fruit, with an attractive texture.  In hotter years such as 2020 and '22 the texture can come from glycerin, but not so in this new vintage.  The warm autumn meant that growers picked early, to preserve ripeness, leaving plenty of malic acid to be converted in lactic acid during the malo-lactic fermentation, giving a supple, sometimes creamy texture.  The perception of alcohol on the palate is also notably low, giving the white wines a weightless quality.  At least one grower compared the '23 white wines to the superb 2017s, but with more fruit concentration.  The distinct terroirs of each vineyard were beautifully delineated, particularly in Puligny-Montrachet.

The red wines

The reds were among the most immediate and approachable we have tasted from barrel, even at the level of the grands crus.  The fruit concentration may be a notch lower than in the 22s, but we found more red fruit character, more acidity, more balance, and more precise expression of terroirs.  Tasting at domaines like Joseph Voillot and Hudelot-Baillet in Chambolle, the wines were generous but with nothing excessive about them.  The acidity and tannins will ensure they age beautifully.

The case for 2023 Burgundy

2022 and 2023 are both beautiful and plentiful vintages, bookended by 2021 and 2024, which were severely reduced in quantity.  The very best wines (at every price level) will most likely sell out this year.  Whilst the market for the top ten domaines (DRC et al) has been over-heated and seen prices falling, this does not apply to the more modest domaines that are the focus of our offer.  Wines like those from Michelot in Meursault and the Santenays from Borgeot and Bachey-Legros are extraordinarily good value, in their context.

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges ler Cru is a little smudged and overripe compared to other cuvées. The palate is quite smooth and sensual on the entry. It's slightly lactic in style-its richness is countered by acidity. To be honest, I prefer the previous vintage to this. 89-91 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"Still a fair length of barrel elevage to come. Dense crimson colour, plenty of oak but a massive fruit weight to match. So different from Vaucrains, vastly more depth and energy though I still crave for the finesse of Vaucrains. This is more evidently immediately satisfying, and has the classic heart of this part of the Côte. Drink from 2032-2040. 5 star rating. 95-97 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very succinct on the nose. It doesn't race out of the blocks but skulks around like a moody teen, biding its time before offering blackberry, raspberry and forest floor scents. It has fine delineation and I appreciate the restraint. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, lovely balance and poise, plenty of energy and a touch of black pepper toward the finish. What a beautiful Bonnes Mares. 94-96 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge offers crushed strawberry and red plum scents on the nose that needs just a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with nicely integrated 15% new oak lending a silky texture toward the finish. It's easy drinking in the positive sense of that word. 89 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Bourgogne Rouge is a blend from two lieux-dits. It has a vibrant nose with cranberry and wild strawberry fruit in good concentration for a regional wine. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame the fleshy red fruit. Enjoy this well-made red over the next four or five years. 88 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Borniques ler Cru was raised in one- and two-year-old barrels. A mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, it is a little earthier than Les Cras without the same degree of precision. The palate is fresh, crisp and medium-bodied with fine tannins. It's not the most complex Chambolle, yet there is plenty of energy here. Give this two or three years once bottled. 91-93 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a lively, vibrant, well-defined bouquet with black cherry, raspberry and light herbaceous scents. It will need time in bottle to really gel. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly lactic entry, with hints of dark chocolate infusing the red fruit. It's silky smooth on the finish with perhaps just a soupçon of fig. It leans slightly toward a more exotic style but is still attractive. 90-92 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras ler Cru, matured with 30% new oak, has a little more precision and a touch more mineral drive within the red fruit than Les Charmes. The palate is beautifully balanced, poised and focused with filigree tannins and a keen line of acidity toward the tensile finish. At the moment, this is the best wine from the domaine this year. 93-95 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes, from vines between 60 and 70 years old, has a beautifully defined bouquet with cranberry and wild strawberry fruit scents, sous-bois and neatly integrated 25% new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, sweet black cherries and crushed strawberry scents and a dab of candied orange peel toward the finish. This will be very seductive. 90-92 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Tasting Notes"The 2023 Chablis Village has a more floral bouquet. White flower hints complement the citrus fruit. The palate is lively and fresh, with good concentration and a touch of bitter lemon with ample weight on the finish for a Village Cru...Drink 2024-2029. 88 points" Neal Martin, Vinous.com------"This is aromatically similar to the Petit Chablis with more evident floral influences as well as a bit more Chablis typicity. There is also a bit more volume to the sleeker and more vibrant flavors that are agreeably textured and punchy without the slightly rustic finale. This too should drink well after only 2ish or so years of keeping. 88 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------"Pale colour. The bouquet shows the stones as it should, with white orchard fruit behind. A little lactic and buttery though entirely in stainless steel. More energy behind leaves a fine crisp aftertaste. Drink from 2025-2027. 88 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

Tasting Notes"The nose is still carrying vestiges of the malolactic fermentation and is unreadable. On the palate though there is good freshness to the appealingly vibrant medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the persistent, agreeably dry and detailed finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. 89-91 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------"Made in concrete eggs, not yet racked or sulphured since Les Forêts has only just finished fermenting. Still in its lactic phase. Very embryonic, though there is a promising weight of fruit. A bit of fresh liquorice, this is potentially one of the more energetic wines in the cellar and I expect it to develop well from here. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Jul 2024. 90-92 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

Tasting Notes"Now blended into tank, having been entirely vinified in wood. Mid lemon yellow. Perhaps the wood is a little more marked here. Good bright fruit in the middle with vibrant acidity but the wood is indeed less well integrated, for now. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Jul 2024. 89-91 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com"More subtle though still easily perceptible oak influence is present on the more floral-suffused aromas that feature notes of Granny Smith apple, spice, wet stone and a whiff of iodine. The mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is notably finer, though not denser, while retaining good delineation to the stony and sleek finale. This is still quite primary though if it can add depth with a few years of bottle age, it should be quite good. 89-92 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound
WHITE 2023 Jean Collet & Fils - Chablis Montmains 1er cru 75cl £120 per case of 6 Jean Collet & Fils

Tasting Notes"Collet explained that this had just been racked and filtered yesterday so not surprisingly, it was quite firmly reduced and revealing almost nothing. More interesting are the finer but not denser middle weight flavors that possess good vibrancy if only average depth before concluding in a bitter lemon-inflected finale. 87-90 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------"All made in stainless steel. Pale lemon colour. Quite exotic white fruit. A luscious perfume sitting on top of the stones, which reappear at the back and deliver some welcome tension. Which part will dominate later? Drink from 2026-2030. Tasted Jul 2024. 89-91 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

Tasting Notes"Once again the nose reflects moderate wood influence though it easily allows the slightly riper if otherwise similar aromas to shine. There is also excellent intensity to the denser and more powerful broad-shouldered and sappy flavors that possess a supple mid-palate that tightens up noticeably on the solidly persistent and nicely dry finale that could also use better depth. 90-92 points" Allen Meadows' Burghound------"Still in barrel. Some fresh pale yellow colour. Ripe orchard and plum fruit, plenty of generosity. There is fair length, possibly just a little light in tension through the middle, becoming more generous again right at the finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted Jul 2024. 91-93 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com
