Burgundy 2023 En Primeur

Burgundy 2023 En Primeur
"I am hard pushed to think of another vintage so pleasurable from barrel—pleasure that its best growers will translate into bottle." Neal Martin, Vinous, Jan '25
In late November we made our annual pilgrimage to Burgundy, to taste the 2023 vintage from barrel. The wines were a wonderful surprise, far higher in quality and exciting to taste than we had anticipated. The white wines are ripe but beautifully fresh, slightly less concentrated than the '22s, but with more texture and balance. The reds are delightful to taste, with exceptionally supple tannins, immediate but also age-worthy. Best of all, both reds and whites were especially representative of their terroirs this year, something you don't see so readily in hotter years.
2023 also produced a good-sized harvest, similar to 2022. With the 2024 harvest drastically reduced in size, this year's en primeur campaign represents an excellent opportunity to secure stocks of your favourite wines.
Fresh and supple are the bywords for the 2023 vintage
The 2023 growing season was unusual in recent times, in so far as there were no extreme weather events! Spring frosts were largely avoided, mildew pressure was moderated by airflow and not an issue for most, and temperatures, although warm, did not see the heat spikes that characterised 2022. The conditions were so favourable that many producers carried out a green harvest, reducing the volume of the crop by removing a proportion of unripe fruit from the vines.
The autumn ripening period saw some beautiful weather, but although temperatures were in the mid-30s by day, by night they cooled significantly. Most producers harvested in the first 2-3 weeks of September. Rain in the Côte de Nuits around 16-18 September was a key decision point, with some growers opting to delay harvesting until after the rains had passed.
The white wines
For us, the white wines were consistent in offering beautifully ripe fruit, with an attractive texture. In hotter years such as 2020 and '22 the texture can come from glycerin, but not so in this new vintage. The warm autumn meant that growers picked early, to preserve ripeness, leaving plenty of malic acid to be converted in lactic acid during the malo-lactic fermentation, giving a supple, sometimes creamy texture. The perception of alcohol on the palate is also notably low, giving the white wines a weightless quality. At least one grower compared the '23 white wines to the superb 2017s, but with more fruit concentration. The distinct terroirs of each vineyard were beautifully delineated, particularly in Puligny-Montrachet.
The red wines
The reds were among the most immediate and approachable we have tasted from barrel, even at the level of the grands crus. The fruit concentration may be a notch lower than in the 22s, but we found more red fruit character, more acidity, more balance, and more precise expression of terroirs. Tasting at domaines like Joseph Voillot and Hudelot-Baillet in Chambolle, the wines were generous but with nothing excessive about them. The acidity and tannins will ensure they age beautifully.
The case for 2023 Burgundy
2022 and 2023 are both beautiful and plentiful vintages, bookended by 2021 and 2024, which were severely reduced in quantity. The very best wines (at every price level) will most likely sell out this year. Whilst the market for the top ten domaines (DRC et al) has been over-heated and seen prices falling, this does not apply to the more modest domaines that are the focus of our offer. Wines like those from Michelot in Meursault and the Santenays from Borgeot and Bachey-Legros are extraordinarily good value, in their context.

Tasting Notes(Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) "Mid lemon yellow. Strict, fine and expressing the stony character of the vineyard more than the exuberance of the vintage. This is actually perfectly balanced, with just the right ripeness on the palate too. A fine minerality. Poise, class and length, very good. Tasting Notes(Heritiers Louis Jadot) "A full ruby to crimson. The bouquet makes a statement, more savoury than sucrosity. The Corton Pougets has fine depth too, with tannins, but all this will come together. Tasting Notes(Domaine) "The darkest colour of the three wines from the St-Jacques sector, and the most sombre in fruit. But there is a great deal of it, and it fills the mouth comprehensively. Very backward, quite firm tannins, and while I could use a bit more liveliness I expect that will come later. Tasted Oct 2024. 93-96 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes(Domaine) "What a wealth of fruit is there, plus a streak of nervous energy, this is very well done. Tasting Notes(Domaine) "Mid lemon yellow. Plenty of weight on the nose, stones to follow perhaps? Yes indeed, on the palate. Tasting Notes(Domaine) "Fresh mid lemon. A little bit of oak joins the fruit on the nose, and there is a floral element too. Then the palate offers the limestone pebble effect. A fine, interesting and complete Pernand, the best En Caradeux (the actual vineyard of Croix de Pierre) I have tasted from 2023. Drink from 2028-2032. Tasting Notes"Racked to tank, to bottle shortly. Their own sub-Puligny plots, all made in barrel. Quite a discreet nose, with the oak influence subdued. The concentration comes at the back of the palate, with white orchard fruit backed by the right degree of oak, good acidity and persistence. Tasting Notes"Two plots, picked together. Pale lemon yellow. A burst of quite fleshy white fruit on the nose. Picked early as it had hit 13% and acidities were about to start declining. This tastes fully ripe yet with plenty of energy. Waves of fruit comes across the palate. Just the oak is not completely integrated. Tasting Notes"Mostly from lower plots with a bit of Vireuils and Clous. Lemon yellow. Not at all expressive on the nose, yet. There is plenty of fruit on the palate though, with some breadth. White ripe orchard fruit, just a little citrus as well, medium bodied, persistent. Quite accessible in style, just needs time for the aromatics to deliver. Drink from 2027-2030. 88-90 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"Pale lemon colour. A light perfume with some herbal notes. Discreet but distinguished. Builds beautifully on the palate, with fresh energy, a lime streak, though the main fruit hovers between white and yellow, attractively oaked, and with very fine length. Attractive tension too. Drink from 2027-2032. 90-92 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |

Tasting Notes"Smells like buttercups and marigolds and melted butter. Dried grass and popcorn and chamomile. Lots of lemon citrus. Almost more a parcel of beautiful elements than a painting, yet. Lots of detail and complexity here but not a composition yet. 17 points" jancisrobinson.com (TC)------"Very little affected by the hail, fortunately. White fruit tension on the nose. There is a good lemon wash too across the stone fruit, and a fine long finish which in fact keeps delivering a little more. Drink from 2027-2032. 91-93 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.comuit, a little greengage, and good length. Shows the Poruzots character which is more about shape and structure than ample fruit. Very classy finish. Drink from 2028-2033. 91-94 points" Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com |
